With goalkeeper Howard Simons away in the Carribean, striker Ben Jones took over in goal and helped his side to a fine away win.

This was always going to be a hard game both in physically and mentally and there were several tackles which both teams were grateful were not noticed by the umpires.

But despite this, Chippenham put in a good team performance – Darren Bean particularly had an excellent game.

Bristolians opened the scoring which was soon cancelled out by Chippenham. But Bristolians regained the lead, only to have that cancelled out fairly quickly. The score remained level at 2-2 going into the half-time break.

Some equally strong words from team skipper Dave Ward during the break saw Chippenham come out all guns blazing. The tactic paid off and Chippenham were soon 4-2 up after scoring two goals in six minutes.

Old Bristolians were now playing with the sun in their eyes which Chippenham took full advantage of. Taking the score to 7-3, they perhaps took their foot off the gas.

This time it was Bristolians who took advantage to pull a fourth gaol back.

The last quarter of the game was frantic and although there had been some hard tackles, with just five minutes to go, no cards had been shown.

But a 50/50 challenge saw Chippenham’s Cameron Main the unlucky receiver of the only yellow card of the game.

Chippenham were down a man but as the game entered into the dying minutes, the result was not in doubt and Chippenham took the three points.

For goal scorer Main it was the right result. He said: “The team missed not having Howard’s vocal contributions during the game and that meant the team’s stability was a bit rocky. But we held it together and took three very hard, fought for points.”

Chippenham go to bottom side Bath Buccs F on Saturday.
