Swindon Town manager Danny Wilson says the key to his side staying clear of the League One trap door is their home form.

He believes two wins will propel his side hurtling into mid-table and relative safety.

The wintery weather foiled the Robins’ attempts to make it three matches unbeaten as frost claimed Saturday’s home fixture against Southend United, following encouraging performances at home to Walsall and at Oldham.

A tough trip to league leaders Leicester, followed by a midweek clash at Millwall are next up but Wilson doesn’t have to look far to see just where Town’s real problems this season have been.

Just four wins from 14 matches on home turf have left them languishing above the relegation zone and the manager admits his team will have to use all their guile and invention to improve that dismal record.

He said: “Two positive results - six points I’m talking about - and we can find ourselves right in there. And that’s got to be our aim. We can’t be looking below us, we’ve got to be looking at the teams in front and halfway up the table.

“If we can achieve that then we can start clawing back teams above us again.’’ Town’s problems in their own back yard are well documented, not that the manager thinks they are the only ones to suffer.

He added: “You will see that anywhere up and down the country, apart from with the big clubs, the home form has been patchy. And I think that it’s because of the way teams set themselves up away from home now.

“There’s not as much emphasis on opening themselves up, and the onus is on the home team. And it’s difficult if you haven’t got that type of player in your team to try and break them down with a bit of craft or a bit of cleverness or guile.

“I think that’s possibly why teams struggle to unlock doors at home, then you see a set play or a counter attack, you’re undone and everyone gets frustrated.

“It’s a problem up and down the country - not just here. Most teams have come across that as we’ve gone along this season.

“If teams come away from home and don’t have any ambition to do anything and come out and play football, then we’re all going to lose our jobs because it will be boring as hell.”
