Pupils at a school in Warminster are getting the chance to learn new skills such as Kung Fu as part of their link with a Chinese school.

Minster Primary School in Emwell Street, Warminster, is part of a link scheme between eight schools in Wiltshire and eight schools in China, set up by the former Wiltshire County Council a year ago.

The Warminster school is twinned with Jiu Jiang Central Primary School in Nanhai and this week Jiu Jiang’s headteacher Tang Wei Wen visited Minster School for the first time.

Sue Worringham, who has been headteacher of Minster school for five years and who visited China last year, said: “Mr Tang has been observing the school, talking to the children, and discussing the differences between the UK and Chinese education systems.

“I think the link helps both schools understand one another's cultures. For example, when I came back from China last year I implemented some Chinese workshops for the children to do such as paper cutting, Kung Fu and Chinese cooking.

“The pupils have also been emailing each other to develop an appreciation of other cultures.

“They are fascinated by Chinese culture.”

The schools next joint project will be on endangered animals in the UK, Europe and China.
