Four west Wiltshire towns will get in the Christmas spirit over the next four days as they turn on their displays of festive lights.

The Christmas lights will be illuminated in the High Street, Westbury, tonight.

Special guests at the switch-on, which will be at 5.30pm, will include Jono from radio station 3TR fm, as well as Father Christmas.

The event marks the start of a host of festive events in the town, including a street party and Christmas food market on December 12 featuring an ice rink, climbing wall and children’s rides.

In neighbouring Warminster, a day-long schedule of activities to mark the lights switch-on will get under way from 10am tomorrow, partly organised by sixth formers at Kingdown School.

A mass carol session, a Santa’s grotto, stalls and live music will feature at the event, with mayor Tony Nicklin switching on the lights at 4.45pm.

Father Christmas will be in Melksham Town Hall tomorrow (Saturday) for the annual lights switch-on featuring choral music, stalls and Chuffy the Train.

The lights will be switched on by mayor Richard Wiltshire and town crier Peter Dauncey at 5pm, but the Market Place will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland from 2pm.

The area is closed off to traffic from midnight tonight.

Children wanting to see Father Christmas can ask their parents to pay a fee of £1.50, which includes a present.

The Melksham Family of Churches will be singing carols outside the Town Hall and will be accompanied by the Bratton Silver Band from 3pm until 5pm.

Meanwhile, in Bradford on Avon, there will be an invasion of Stormtroopers and Daleks when the town’s lights are switched on this Tuesday.

This year’s festive celebration is based on space, to mark 40 years since the moon landing.

The town’s chamber of commerce ran a Buy-a-Bulb competition, where people paid £1 to sponsor a bulb.

The lights will be switched on by the winner of the Buy-a-Bulb draw, in Westbury Gardens at 6pm on Tuesday.
