West Wiltshire shivered through its coldest January for more than 20 years, figures have revealed.

Amateur weatherman Geoff Witts, from Steeple Ashton, released his monthly figures which showed the average temperature for the month was 1.4 degrees Celsius - making it the coldest January since 1987.

The temperature of minus 9.6 degrees recorded on January 6 was the coldest day in west Wiltshire for 13 years.

Snow and ice caused chaos on the roads throughout January, with schools shut for several days, the sporting schedule decimated and firms closing early as employees and customers were unable to get in.

The temperature fell below zero on 21 days in January, and never got above zero degrees Celsius on January 8.

The majority of snow fell on between January 5 and 6, when 8cms fell and between January 12 and 13 when 6.5cm fell.
