Readers may be aware that the Area Board for Trowbridge has recently passed a resolution to promote non-smoking in children’s play areas.
This is a much welcomed, although partial, victory after a number of years of campaigning on this issue.
The officer’s report stated there had been no complaints from the public. However, this was untrue. I have had a number of conversations on this issue with irate parents in my capacity as town councillor and had put forward the motion on behalf of both them and myself.
I am passionate about ensuring there is at least one area where young people can be free of the overpowering smell of tobacco and its associated litter.
As such, I am very disappointed by the negative attitude of Cllr Francis Morland and certain council officers, especially as Wiltshire Council has taken such a strong stance against council staff smoking in open areas on council sites.
As this initial project relies on the goodwill of the public can I please urge all smokers to refrain from lighting up in children’s play areas?
Please help us to set a good example to our younger generation and keep fenced play areas healthy and clean for young people.
If this can be achieved then Trowbridge will be a beacon town, not just to the rest of Wiltshire, but to the whole country.
Cllr Andrew Bryant (Lib Dem), Horse Road, Hilperton Marsh.
