A Trowbridge man has organised a 24-hour charity karting event to raise money for research into a hereditary disease which his wife suffers from.

Martin Maskelyne, 42, and his friend Kevin Beard are organising a second karting event at Hullavington’s circuit for the weekend of May 29 and 30, following the success of last year’s event.

Mr Maskelyne’s wife Julie, 47, was diagnosed with Huntingdon’s Disease seven years ago.

Her three sons Wayne, 25, Jamie, 23, and Jayson 21, are also taking part in the fundraising event to raise money for the research, which will not only help their mum but possibly themselves as well, as there is a 50 per cent chance of the disease being passed on.

Mr Maskelyne, of Lambrok Road, said: “We are trying to raise awareness about this terrible illness and raise as much money as possible.

“We raised just under £1,500 last year with five teams of eight, which meant we had 40 drivers in total. We aim to have more this year.”

The 24-hour karting event will be held from 3pm on May 29 through to May 30.

Six teams have already confirmed, with eight people in each team.

Mr Maskelyne is looking for any individual drivers who would like to take part to contact him. They will need to raise £100 each in sponsorship and around 10 to 15 per cent of the total funds raised will be taken to cover costs, while the rest goes to Huntington’s Disease Association.
