A 150-YEAR-OLD awning which Wiltshire Council declared a health and safety hazard is still being used by Trowbridge shop owner Michael Lodjko.

Council inspectors targeted shops in Church Street for breaking health and safety rules. Mr Lodjko’s antiquities store The Old Sweet Works fell foul of them.

Mr Lodjko was ordered to pin back the awning and to keep the pavement clear of his wares, a decision which he described in the Times in June as ‘silly’.

The awning could still be challenged by Wiltshire Council if it does not form part of the building’s Grade II listed status.

Wiltshire Council hasnot ruled out the threat of further action.

A spokesman said: “We are keeping an eye on the situation to ensure the pathway is kept clear.”

Inspectors also told workers painting the wall of the flat above a neighbouring shop that they must stop work because their ladder could have been a health and safety risk. Painters completed the work anyway.
