I ENTIRELY agree with your correspondent Margaret Purves, and her summarisation of the Bradford on Avon Town Council and their arrogant disregard of the townsfolk’s decision to refuse the cable stay bridge.

Instead of attempting to spend c £1m on a bridge that is neither wanted or needed, why not simply and much more cost-effectively, rearrange the existing town bridge layout, as your other correspodent Greg Knowles suggested in your August 5 edition, by widening the pavement on the Kingston Mill side and doing away with the pavement on the Abbey Mill side, so greatly enhancing pedestrian safety but without impeding traffic flow? This would solve the problem until such time as we have a much needed bypass.

The money saved on the cable stay bridge could then be better utilised in improving and maintaining our existing facilities, such as painting and/or treating roadside and park seating and railings, weeding and tidying footpaths and broken kerbs.

Provide more seating and tables in the country park, along with a much needed increase in metal refuse bins throughout the town.

Also clean up the Poulton playing field area, that is constantly covered in litter, broken bottles and the odd shopping trolley.

Bradford on Avon Town Council also need to be aware that our street cleaners and park attendants need to be much better managed and organised, to ensure that they are not only at work but actually working productively. We are after all paying their wages.
