Firefighters rescued a man from a fire in a disused tyre workshop on Saturday evening.

The man, believed to be homeless, was rescued from the first floor of the building in Mortimer Street just after 7pm.

Upon arriving at the incident crews were faced with smoke emitting from the building and fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent in to put the fire out and search the building for any people who may be inside.

the man was treated at the scene by Great Western Ambulance Service Paramedics for smoke inhalation.

No one else was found in the building. It is believed that the fire started on the ground floor with smoke spreading throughout the entire property.

The appliances from Trowbridge backed up by an appliance from Bradford On Avon dealt with the incident.

Watch Manager Matthew Maggs from Trowbridge Fire Station said: "The outcome for anyone sleeping in this building could have been very different had the fire not been discovered at an early stage.

"Unfortunately some people have no choice but to sleep in buildings like these, but the presence of a working smoke detector can give an early detection of a fire allowing the occupants to get out sooner.

"Homeless packs are available from the Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service Incident Reduction Team and include a smoke detector."
