A POLISH man, depressed about work and losing his boyfriend, took his own life by lying in front of a train in Dilton Marsh, an inquest has determined.

A jury returned a verdict of suicide after hearing how Mateusz Cyran, 23, was seen on CCTV footage from the front of a train lying across the rails at 10.04pm on December 18, 2010.

Mr Cyran, formerly of Staverton, near Trowbridge, was living in Portsmouth, but had returned by train to Wiltshire on the night of his death.

It is believed he walked down the track to the point, about 300 yards north of Dilton Marsh station, where he was hit.

In evidence read to Tuesday’s hearing at Trowbridge Town Hall, train driver Mark Peters said he was travelling very slowly, due to leaves on the line.

“I was travelling at about 20 to 30mph at the time,” said Mr Peters, who has worked for First Great Western Railway for 30 years.

“There were no other lights but the train lights and the weather was dry.

“Just past Dilton Marsh station, I was shocked to see a person emerge from bushes and stop on the embankment.

“I was relieved to see them stop, but almost immediately they walked towards the track and lay across it. I had no chance to react by breaking or sounding the horn.”

Mr Cyran was pronounced dead on the scene.

Pathologist Dr Victoria Elliott gave the cause of death as a traumatic injury to the head. Mr Cyran had moved to Trowbridge from Poland in February last year, looking for work, and had signed up with an employment agency in the town until August.

He moved to Sultan Road in Portsmouth, where he started working with Mitie cleaning continental ferries, and moved in with co-worker Slawomir Skomial.

He met Lukas Wiktorowicz on an online dating site and they became a couple. However, they split a week before his death after Mr Cyran admitted cheating.

Mr Wiktorowicz, whose statement was read out, said Mr Cyran approached him days before his death, to see if they could reunite.

Mr Skomial said his friend had been working long hours, with no days off, and was not enjoying his job.
