KNORR-Bremse in Melksham has announced it will be making 14 people redundant.

The Melksham factory, which manufactures braking systems for railways and trains, employs around 365 people at its Westinghouse Way site.

The firm is blaming a downturn in the rail business for the job losses.

It is believed all employees at the site will have the opportunity to apply for voluntary redundancy, meaning the redundancies could fall in office and shop floor departments.

A spokesman for the company said: “The Knorr-Bremse decision to reduce its workforce by 14 positions at its Melksham facility is due to the cyclical nature of the rail business in the UK, combined with delays in the placement of major original equipment contracts for new trains.

“The available rail business in the UK will suffer a greater than predicted downturn in 2012 and Knorr-Bremse must react to this market situation.

“Knorr-Bremse in Melk-sham will continue to be a major employer and investor in Melksham and a major force in UK and global rail markets.”
