A new Trowbridge bar is being investigated after two serious assaults took place there within six days.

The Black Pearl, which opened in Church Street earlier this month, was the scene of a fight involving several men who had been drinking there, on April 13 at 7.30pm.

One man sustained a broken nose, cuts and bruises. A 43-year-old man was arrested, then bailed until May 25.

Six days later, on April 19 at 11.30pm, two men suffered head injuries and were taken to Royal United Hospital in Bath following a brawl where glass was smashed.

The next day, police licensing officers raided the premises and closed it, after learning the designated supervisor, who must be in place for a venue to sell alcohol, had been sacked three days earlier.

A second attempt to appoint a supervisor failed on Monday, when the nominee withdrew their application. On Wednesday, when police entered the bar, which used to be run as Peewees, a third supervisor had been selected. The bar has now reopened.

Police licensing officer Jackie Gallimore said: “These incidents alerted police and licensing teams to what was going on. You cannot sell alcohol without that person and so it was closed.

“We are going to continue monitoring the situation very closely.”

The bar already has strict conditions following a licensing hearing on March 20. Among 17 conditions set, it is not allowed to serve drinks in glasses or glass bottles after 9pm, CCTV had to be installed and an incident log book had to be created.
