WESTBURY councillors were "bitterly disappointed" in Wiltshire Council's decision to give Northacre Renewable Energy permission to change its technology for the energy from waste incinerator.

The councillors who were allowed to speak at Tuesday's strategic planning committee had all urged its 11 members to refuse the application.

Cllr Matthew Dean, for Westbury West, said: "I’m bitterly disappointed by today’s decision.

"I felt the objectors made the best case and yet despite that approval went through.

"It’s a red letter day for the town.

I shall do everything I can to persuade the Secretary of State to call in the application and refuse it."

Cllrs Ian Cunningham and Gordon King said the scheme would adversely affect the town's air quality and increase traffic congestion.

John Masson, chairman of Heywood Parish Council, and Val Jarvis, of Dilton Marsh Parish Council, also voiced their objections to the application.
