CHILDREN between the ages of eight and 16 can now learn how to play golf at a more professional level at Christie Miller Sports Centre, Melksham.

PGA teaching professional Simon Shanks will be delivering specialised sessions at Christie Miller's nine hole par three golf course over five weeks.

The introductory course begins on Sunday February 4 - once children have passed this stage, they will progress onto a more involved 10 week course.

Shanks said: : "This is a scheme that I have used over the past few years.

Each pupil will receive a Junior Passport, which they can use to keep track of their development.

"This is designed to teach them all the skills and etiquette needed to play golf, and there are five levels - short game, long game, putting, rules and etiquette. Once the pupil has passed through all the levels, they will be ready to obtain a club handicap."

Shanks is a Golf Foundation tri golf leader and a golf passport starter professional. In his previous job at Kingsdown Golf Club, he was responsible for individual and group teaching for the seniors, ladies and juniors.

Other previous experience includes teaching professional at Combe Grove Manor Hotel and Country Club near Bath.

He has enjoyed success playing on the West Region PGA circuit and is also secretary for the Wiltshire PGA.

The courses begin on Sunday February 4 and you can book your child in for either 10am to 11am or 11.15am to 12.15pm.
