TWO Trowbridge pupils set personal bests to win a place on the podium at the South of England Indoor Athletics Championships on Sunday.

Sophie Upton and Daniel Talbot, from St Augustine's College, were among the medal winners in the under 17s event at the Lee Valley Athletic Centre in London.

The pair, who train at the Wessex and Bath club, will now go on to compete at the AAAs Indoor Championships in Birmingham next month.

Sophie, 16, set an indoor personal best of 3.50m to scoop silver in the women's pole vault. She almost cleared 3.60m, but clipped the bar with her heels on the descent.

"I went into the event with a relaxed attitude and it worked," said Sophie.

"My form going into the championships had not been great, but I really vaulted well on the day.

"I was neck and neck with the girl that won and we kept pushing each other to go higher. Hopefully I can take this form into the AAAs and get a medal there too."

Daniel, 15, smashed his personal best by one second to win bronze in the men's 200m race.

His time of 22.69s saw him finish just behind rival Rhion Samuel, from Enfield and Haringey Athletic Club and Croydon Harrier Lee McLaughlin.

Said Daniel: "I knew I had a good lane in the final but it was still really exciting to get a medal.

"Rhion came first in the under 15s race last year, so I knew I had a chance if I kept him in my sights.

"In end he came second, but I was close enough to him to win the bronze."

Daniel is now aiming to shave another three tenths off his personal best to win a medal at the AAAs.

"I will probably need to run 22.40s to be in with a shout, so I have plenty of work to do between now and then," he said.

Rob Pitcher, head of PE at St Augustine's, said: "Lots of kids have talent, but these two are very self-motivated. The Olympic Games are five years away, so they both have something to aim for," he said.
