St LAURENCE School Year 11 rugby team beat Sheldon School to claim the first Mid Wilts U16 Cup at Chippenham RFC.

The Bradford on Avon school avenged an earlier 34-19 defeat to their Chippenham rivals.

St Laurence made e nervous start before a moment of brilliance from Drew Retford saw him round five players to score in the corner.

This was the catalyst for the next 15 minutes as St Laurence put Sheldon to the sword, playing their typical high-tempo game.

Second row Joe Crowe crashed over and further pressure allowed skipper Jamie Howell to find another gap, Jac Stone adding the conversion.

The defining moment of the game came in the last five minutes of the first half.

Sheldon battered the try line but St Laurence stood firm to retain their lead and gradually ground down their opponents’ confidence.

Teacher Jeremy Hare said: “Over the past five years the boys have grown and matured into a fantastic team, their work ethic and determination to succeed has been second to none.

“Their last game together showed how they all worked for each other, left nothing on the pitch and rightly avenged their defeat.”
