IT MAY not have been the fixture that caught the eye in Division Three but the match between mid-table sides Buttercross FC and Cannings Rangers was as exciting as the previous encounter between the teams that finished 3-2 in favour of the Butter boys.

On this occasion Cannings came out on top as they edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3.

A double from Cannings top scorer Jason Greenidge got the villagers off to a dream start, but it didn’t last for long as Scott Nash got Buttercross back in the game only for Cannings to open up a two-goal lead again, Jacob Rogers scoring his first of the season to make it 3-1.

Ben Butterfield kept the Butter boys’ in the game when he narrowed the gap to the odd goal prior to half time.

After the break Cannings went 4-2 up, Gabriel Gospodinov scoring his third of the season, but back came Buttercross and when James Flynn scored from the penalty spot it was game on once more.

Although they huffed and puffed they were unable to bag a fourth goal that their efforts deserved as Cannings saw the game out to claim maximum points for a seventh time this season.

Just a few weeks after claiming a 3-1 success at home to Corsham Park, Stonewood Sunday’s made the relatively short trip to Leafy Lane for the reverse fixture and, like the first encounter, it was Stonewood who thanks to a 5-2 win took the honours.

Kris Beasley saw his opener for Stonewood cancelled out by Kevin Bance and with the game promised to be another thriller, however after the interval Stonewood surged into a 5-1 lead, Beasley adding a further two and Andy Flynn and Ashley Barnett putting the visitors out of sight before Jake Marshall replied with a second for Corsham.

Trowbridge Wanderers (Sunday) were unable to build on last week's fine victory over Corsham Park. Matt Rusling’s took his team to FC Lacock who claimed a 4-2 success that went some way to avenging their 4-1 loss in the reverse fixture back in February.

Josh Hard was the star of the show for Lacock, scoring all four of their goals, his first separated the sides at half time and he added a further two that made it 3-0 before Wanderers got back in it through goals from Tom Mann and Paul Gittins. Hard scored his fourth that sealed victory for the villagers.

Westbury Conservative Club suffered a heavy loss for a second successive match. Having lost 6-0 to promotion chasing Stonewood Sundays last weekend the Cons’ club hosted leaders Grapes United who, after a lacklustre first half, switched on the after-burners in the second half to run out 8-0 victors.

Mikki Harrison’s goal on 20 minutes and a Will Worley own goal gave Grapes the upper hand in the first half but after the break they were able to undo the shackles that their hosts had place on them in the first period and once Nick Ridout made it 3-0 the floodgates opened.

Stuart Barber made it 4-0 before two more goals from Ridout saw him complete his three timer to take it to 6-0.

Barber’s second of the game made it 7-0 prior to player/manager Tony Couch coming of the bench to make a cameo appearance but his brief showing was rewarded with a goal that was probably the pick of the eight, Couch unleashed a 25 yard left footed screamer to take his team's tally for the season to 91.
