BRADFORD on Avon's Cumberwell Park Golf Club will have two players battling it out for places on the 2017 European Tour next week after Laurie Canter and Steve Surry both emerged from the final day of second round qualifying in Spain today.

Canter, 26, and 34 year old clubmate Surry emerged from separate qualifying tournaments, also in Spain, to book their spots at the six-round final stage, which gets under way at the PGA Catalunya Resort near Girona, starting on Saturday.

For Canter, it will be the chance to secure a second year on the European Tour following his maiden 2016, for which he qualified after coming through the qualifying school finals 12 months ago.

He was in fine form at the Panoramica Golf & Sport Resort event in Castellón, carding a final-round 69 to finish in second place behind fellow Englishman Paul Maddy, having signed for two seven-under-par rounds of 65 in his opening two rounds on Friday and Saturday.

For Surry, progress was altogether more dramatic after a second round of 76 on Saturday had threatened to derail his hopes.

After a four-under-par 67 on Sunday had reignited the Trowbridge man's hopes, he then added a 68 today, but faced a nervous wait to see if it would be enough.

Tied for 15th place with seven others and only 18 spots from his venue available in total, Surry then emerged from a play-off to join Canter in Girona later this week.

A total of 25 players, plus ties, will progress to European Tour status in 2017 after six rounds at the PGA Catalunya next week.
