TEENAGER Cameron Sinden admits he was delighted to be crowned Welsh National men’s champion.
The 17-year-old, from Chapmanslade, initially came sixth in the Great Britain Junior event at the Echo Arena in Liverpool before following that up with a first-place finish at the Welsh Institute of Sport.
While the teenager, who is also a junior coach at West Wilts Esprit club in Trowbridge, had been training hard, he admits his performances still came as a shock to him.
“I was so pleased with it because I halved my position from the year before,” said the 17-year-old.
“Coming first in the Welsh championship a week later was phenomenal. I didn’t think I would be able to better 12th that I got last year.
“I am in the Welsh squad so I will be doing lots and lots of training and competitions with those guys.
“I didn’t have a particularly amazing competition either, I messed up on a couple of things. I came sixth still and to me that said my training is paying off.
“It only encouraged me more to do better in the Welsh Championships, I pushed myself a lot in that competition and did a lot better.”
Another of West Wilts Esprit junior coaches, Catherine Hall, finished third overall at National Grade One at the South West National Grades, earning her a place on the South West team for the national finals in Stoke on Trent on May 20-21.
