LAURIE Canter made the most of his experience at The Open last week to shot a fine opening round at the Porsche European Open in Hamburg today.

The Cumberwell Park pro, who finished tied 37th at Royal Birkdale, started his day in Germany on the 10th hole and was soon picking up shots.

Canter hit back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 to get his round off to the perfect start.

The 27-year-old, however, then handed a shot back with a bogey four at the 14th only to return to two-under for the day with a birdie at the 15th.

Canter then picked up back-to-back birdies on eight and nine as he finished the day with a four-under-par round of 68 to sit two shots behind leader Julian Suri in tied seventh.
