CHARLEY Reed’s century was in vain for Corsham at the weekend as they suffered an agonising final-over defeat in Premier Two Glos/Wilts at home to Cheltenham.

Opener Reed scored a classy unbeaten 110 to help Corsham reach 245-6 off their 50 overs, but Cheltenham chased that down with two balls of their reply to spare to claim a narrow one-wicket win.

Reed received good support from Sam Collier (48) in Corsham’s innings as the duo shared a second-wicket stand of 125 en route to helping their side set a decent target.

Skipper Tom Foley (4-38) and his father Richard Foley (3-38) continued to keep the Cheltenham reply in check as Corsham got their hands on the ball but the home side were unable to claim the final wicket they needed to secure victory.

Although the visitors’ top score was only 48 from Nick Evans, the first eight batsmen in the Cheltenham order contributed at least 19 in the nerve-shredding run chase.

Westbury also suffered defeat on home turf, although there’s was much more convincing as they went down by 51 runs to Rockhampton.

Skipper Alex Senneck said: “We should’ve chased down their total, and chased it easily.

“But we just didn’t bat well enough, we performed well in the first half of the match but didn’t back it up with our batting.

“The wicket was fine, it always is. It was just poor batting on our part.

“We’ve got to be as positive as we possibly can and get the win that we need this weekend.”

Dan Gill took 4-32 as Rockhampton were restricted to 169-9 off 50 overs, Will Tyler leading the way with the bat on 47.

However, the Westbury reply only reached 118 as they were bowled out inside 43 overs as Jamie Wakefield took three wickets.

Trowbridge were able to claim victory at the weekend, although it was without a single ball being played as Lechlade forfeited their scheduled home meeting.
