WARMINSTER ended the season in winning fashion with a 87-run defeat of visitors Royal Wootton Bassett but it was not enough to claim the WEPL Wiltshire title.

Peter Hickerton's side began the final day sitting third in the table and still in with a shout of claiming the crown, but were unable to improve on that position after the top two of Chippenham and Marshfield both won too.

Warminster finished just 11 points behind champions Chippenham, but will be lamenting an end-of-season slump for their failure to get their hands on the prize.

After winning their opening 11 fixtures of the season, Warminster then went on a six-match winless run to surrender top spot.

Although they finally rectified that by beating Bassett last weekend, the damage was already done.

A brilliant 136-run opening stand set Warminster on their way to victory, with Tom Davie (67) and Jack Berrisford (61) swiftly into their stride after the hosts won the toss and elected to bat.

However, once those two fell, wickets fell at regular intervals and four each for Bassett's Sam Lawro and Charanveer Chahal saw Warminster dismissed for 212.

After tea, Alex Adam soon got stuck into the Bassett top order, claiming the scalps of five of the first six in the batting line-up to finish with figures of 5-47.

That meant the visitors never looked likely to chase down their target and they were eventually all out for 125 inside 31 overs.

Corsham 2nd finished second from bottom in the table in their first season in the WEPL, having been promoted from the Wiltshire League 12 months ago.

They finished the season with a four-wicket loss away at runners-up Marshfield.

Corsham won the toss and opted to bat but made just 121 before being bowled out, with Jeremy Bond (4-20) doing the primary damage.

That meant Marshfield's run chase was relatively routine, and although Luke Draper took 3-36, the visitors needed less than 17 overs to reach a winning 122-6.
