WESTBURY United joint-manager Neil Kirkpatrick felt his side’s 4-1 win away at Odd Down last Saturday was far from perfect despite the emphatic nature of the scoreline.

The victory in Bath saw United make it six from six at the start of the new Toolstation League Premier Division and was built on dominant first-half performance.

Westbury roared into a 3-0 lead at the break but an Odd Down goal with 20 minutes to play began to ruffle the visitors’ feathers before they put the game to bed with a fourth goal in the closing stages.

Kirkpatrick, who manages the side alongside his son Joe, said: “Our performance in the first half was good but I was really disappointed with how we played in the second half, if I am honest.

“Conditions weren’t ideal and the pitch wasn’t great but we did well in the first half. To be 3-0 up at half-time, it is almost game over.

“We said to the lads at half-time that it would be easy to go off the pace given the scoreline, so we needed to be ruthless and put them to the sword.

“We could have done that, we had chances to do it, but we didn’t take them. We got a bit sloppy, which I didn’t like, but I suppose it is easy for that to happen given the circumstances.

“We let them back in it and at 3-1 we had a difficult 20 minutes because if it then gets to 3-2, all of a sudden it is a bit nervy.

“Having said that, if you’d told me on Saturday morning that we would go to Odd Down and win 4-1 then I would have snapped your hand off.”

Despite their early dominance, Westbury had to wait until the half-hour mark to get their noses in front when Callum Demkiv broke the deadlock.

Gareth Evans then doubled the lead before Joe Stradling put the visitors three goals to the good at the break.

Lewis Dunn gave Odd Down a lifeline midway through the second half but Dan Kovacs settled United’s nerves with their fourth goal three minutes from time.

Westbury currently sit third in the table and are at home to league leaders Willand Rovers on Saturday.
