CHIPPENHAM Town manager Mike Cook hopes former loanee Ricky Aguiar can take his chance at Swindon Town and has backed him to score plenty of goals for Ben Garner’s team.

Aguiar signed for Swindon last summer from Isthmian League Premier side Worthing and has made seven appearances for the Robins without scoring so far this season.

His longest league appearance came in last weekend’s 3-0 victory at home to Scunthorpe United, where Aguiar impressed as a substitute for over 60 minutes following Ben Gladwin’s withdrawal through injury.

The ex-Worthing attacker’s opportunities could continue this weekend away at Carlisle United with Jonny Williams, Jordan Lyden, and Ben Gladwin all either definitely out of contention or returning from slight injuries.

Jack Payne may make his comeback, although having been out since New Year’s Day, the 27-year-old is unlikely to play a full 90 minutes so soon – therefore Aguiar could well see some game time from the bench at least.

The 20-year-old had previously spent around two months with the Bluebirds in National League South, scoring seven goals in 13 appearances while creating a handful more for Cook’s side.

It was there that the former Gloucester City boss was able to witness Aguiar’s potential up close, and Cook likened the attacking midfielder to another former Swindon man who continues to impress higher up the Football League.

Resigned to the fact that Chippenham will probably not see Aguiar again, Cook could not speak highly enough of his former loanee.

The Bluebirds boss said: “Ricky will score goals, I promise you. I’ve not worked with anyone – apart from Scott Twine – who strikes the ball as cleanly in training as Ricky does.

“He probably needs a run of maybe four or five games to get his confidence up. He probably sees himself as a non-league player right now, so he needs those four or five games to play well, and then I’m sure as soon as he starts scoring, he won’t stop.

“He’ll make things happen for other players too with little flick-ons and by letting the ball roll on, or he will break down defences through a clever little move or something.

“It doesn’t always come off, don’t get me wrong, but when it does he can be unplayable. Most weeks with us he was absolutely outstanding.”
