SWINDON Town captain Dion Conroy admitted he took great personal satisfaction in scoring the winning goal after his stoppage-time header consigned John Sheridan’s Oldham Athletic to a 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

Conroy endured a difficult six months under his former boss last season as Town were relegated but came up with the perfect response courtesy of his second Swindon goal.

Town’s skeleton squad offered little threat during the first half before upping the ante after the break and looking more dangerous.

However, it took until the 95th minute to land the fatal blow, a strike which helped Swindon move up into sixth while loosening Oldham’s grip on League Two football.

Asked if he’s enjoyed any goal more than that, Conroy replied: “No, not really. I don’t really care if I never score again, I’m happy with that one.

“And to get the three points too, it’s massive. Hopefully now we can push forward during the rest of the season to get where we need to be."

Then pushed on whether there was any particular personal satisfaction in scoring the winner, Conroy said: “Yeah, definitely. 100 per cent.

“It felt good to score that goal, and a lot of things went through my mind when celebrating.

“But that’s football, and I’m happy for the team to get the clean sheet and the three points. To get the goal, personally, that’s a big thing and we’re looking forward to Tuesday now.”

Reflecting on the result overall, the 26-year-old wholeheartedly believed Swindon were good value for the victory and was pleased to see his team grind out an important result.

Conroy said: “I felt like we deserved the win, we dominated the game.

“It’s been like that with a lot of games throughout this season, but we haven’t managed to get that winning goal.

“To get that winning goal right at the end was amazing, a great feeling, and hopefully we can carry that on for the rest of the season.”
