Father and son Zapcat racing team Patrick and George Moger got the shock of their lives when dolphins invaded their course during a race.

Patrick, 48, and George Moger, 16, from Dilton Marsh are currently in 11th place out of 30 teams in the UK Zapcat UK racing circuit Division One.

The Mogers, who are the youngest and oldest competitors in the competition, drive a 50 horse-power two-man inflatable catamaran, which can reach speeds of 50mph on the open water.

The team compete in nine meetings throughout the season and each meeting has two finals with eight boats making each final.

But in their last race at Watergate Bay in Newquay a school of dolphins stopped play.

Patrick said: "There were about 15 dolphins that suddenly came into the course. At first I thought they were some oil cans but then I saw the fins and realised what they were so I went back to shore to tell them to stop the race.

"It was quite something to see them. I've never seen a dolphin before so to see them when you're racing is quite unexpected.2 However, the dolphins didn't stop the Mogers from finishing sixth in the second final of the meeting.

Patrick said: "There were about 28 boats down in Newquay so we were very happy with sixth place.

"That result has taken us up to 11th in the championship.

"We're aiming to finish in the top ten this season and if we can do that we will be very happy."

Patrick started racing Zapcats after watching the event on the extreme sports channel. For the past two seasons he has raced with his daughter Harriet, 19, but has since changed the name of his boat from Daddy's Girl to Crest of a Wave.

He added: "I don't think George would like to be known as a Daddy's girl so I changed the name."

The Mogers will be racing in Bournemouth today and Sunday for the rounds five and six of this season's championship.
