A record number of runners took part in Sunday's Forest 10 mile race, organised by Warminster Running Club.

The race, which starts and finishes at Warminster Cricket Club and goes through the Longleat estate, was entered by 234 runners and was sponsored by the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

Warminster claimed the ladies' team event and Avon Valley Runners clinched the men's team event to make it a productive day for the Wiltshire teams.

But it was a double swoop for Somerset's Wells City Harriers in the individual events as their runners won both the men's and women's runs. Themen's winner was Peter Grist in a time of 57 minutes, 12 seconds and the women's race was won by Jenny Moore in 1 hour, seven minutes and 26 seconds.

Warminster Running Club treasurer Martin Somervell said: "Peter Grist must have been really shifting it to keep up a 10 miles an hour pace, especially when you take into consideration that there are a number of hills along the route. It's a fantastic time.

"Overall the race went very well and we were all pleased that there were no administration hiccups at all.

"We had a record number of entrants with 234 entries this year, which is actually the first time we have been over the 200 mark. The weather was also absolutely excellent for running because it wasn't too hot and there was a slight breeze to cool the runners so it was perfect conditions.

"The aim of the sponsorship from the SSAFA was to publicise their work andeducate people about what the charity does. The SSAFA had at stall at the race and they were also handing out wristlets to every competitor.

"We are extremely grateful to Lord Bath and the Longleat estate for allowing us to run across their site, Warminster cricket club who allow us to use their facilities, St John Ambulance, the highways department and the Wiltshire police, as well as the army of volunteers who without an event like this would not take place."

A major charitable donation will be made from the race and we will be deciding in the next month to six weeks who the money will be going to.
