Westbury duo Chloe Hillier and Edward Mason will spearhead Wiltshire's challenge at next month's English Schools' athletics championships at Gateshead.

The pair dominated the high jump events at the regional championships held at Exeter on Saturday. Hillier, a pupil at Matravers School, Westbury, won the senior girls' event with a leap of 1.63 metres and Mason, who attends Kingsdown School, Warminster, took the senior boys' title with a jump of 1.96 metres.

Mason just missed out on a notable double by finishing second in the seniorboys' long jump his leap of 6.25m just one centimetre short of the markset by Matthew Petersen of Devon. There were several other notable performances from Wiltshire athletes at Exeter. Sam Otto, from St Augustine's College, Trowbridge, won the inter boys' 400metres in a time of 51.6 seconds and Joe Hutchinson, from Devizes School finished first in both the inter boys' 100m hurdles in 13.9 seconds and the200m in 22.9.

Heather Cumming, from Box, who goes to Corsham School, won the inter girls' high jump with 1.62m and Gemma Young, from Lavington School, took first place in the inter girls' shot with a putt of 10.47m.

Hannah Thompson, from St Mary's School, Calne, came second in the intergirls' triple jump and Rachel Sykes, from Sheldon School, Chippenham, tooksecond place in the inter girls' 800 metres.

Richard Batsford came second in the senior boys' 1500m in 4.20.9, with Michael Towler third in 4.27.1. Alastair Todd was third in the inter boys' 400m hurdles in 59.7. In the junior boys' events, George Coward was third in the 1500m in 4.20.7, Callum Bailey third in the triple jump with 11.13 and Josh Tuck second in the hammer with 36.88.

In the inter girls' events Amy Longo was second in the 200m in 26.3, Amanda Clifford won the 300m in 41.9 and Laura Butcher won the polevault with 2.80m. Natasha Zebroski came third in the triple jump with 10.75 and Alice Murray-Gourlay was second in the 3000m with 11.06.6. Yasmin Dyer was second in the senior girl's pole vault with 2.90m.
