Michael Flynn has said that there is a possibility of Jake Cain being available for Swindon Town as early as this weekend.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been missing since he scored in Swindon’s 2-1 win against Grimsby Town at the end of September and had initially been slated for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but Flynn revealed that he was ahead of schedule in his recovery.

Ahead of Town’s defeat to Bradford City, Flynn said that Cain had, “a little tear in one of the ligaments” after feeling an injury in his foot against the Mariners and could be out for, “anything between four and 12 weeks.”

However, despite insisting upon caution with his recovery, the Swindon manager said there was a chance that Cain could be ready as soon as this Saturday when Town face Salford City at the Peninsular Stadium, which would leave Town with just Benn Ward and Reece Devine as absentees.

He said: “I am saying that he [Cain] might be back next week, and I am going to emphasise might on that. It is one of those, it is a very strange injury.

“But he is running, he has been running today, which he couldn’t do at the beginning of the week, so it has been a vast improvement so far.

“We will see how he is, but he is another one back that gives us that strength in depth.”

Despite the potential for getting another first-team player back in contention this weekend, Flynn is still anticipating a difficult weekend in Greater Manchester.

Prior to a dramatic defeat last time out against Wrexham, The Ammies have been much improved of late having won three straight games before their trip to STōK Cae Ras.

Flynn said: “After you win you want to play again straight away [instead of waiting a full week].

“We have a tough game against Salford, they have picked up again, I know they have just lost in the last couple of minutes against Wrexham, but they have picked up.

“They have picked up form, I think it was three wins before today in a row, so it is a tough place to go.

“Then we are back here [The County Ground] on Tuesday, they [the games] are coming thick and fast now.

“We just need to keep plodding along, don’t get too high when we win, and just keep focused and keep believing if things don’t go our way.”
