Accrington Stanley goal scorer said they knew how Swindon Town would respond to their late pressure during the game at the Wham Stadium.

Brad Hills moved from defence to attack to score twice in stoppage time during Town’s 4-3 victory as Accrington gave them an almighty scare from being four goals up after the end of normal time.

Charlie Austin had put Swindon 4-0 up in the 89th minute before Korede Adedoyin and Hills’ brace brought the hosts all the way back into the game as Swindon became the first team in the history of the EFL to concede three times after the 90th minute and still go on to win the game.

The defender said that he was frustrated that Accrington had given themselves the opportunity to earn a point, only to let it slip through their fingers at the end of the game.

Speaking to BBC Lancashire, he said: “Coming back and nearly getting a point from a game that could have been gone at four down, getting so close to getting a point, we are all a bit disappointed now.

“We knew if we got one [goal] they would come and they did, unfortunately, they just came a bit too late.

“First half I thought we played alright and for the whole game we dominated the ball, they just took their chances and, in this league, if you take your chances then you win games. They did that tonight and we didn’t.

“I think I kind of made that decision [to go upfront] myself.

“We knew if we got one then they would fall back and they would drop a bit, and they did.

“It was disappointing that we couldn’t get the last one because we got so close.”

Assistant manager Jimmy Bell was equally frustrated in his post-match interview as he felt his side should have pulled off an unthinkable comeback.

He said to BBC Lancashire: “It was another unbelievable strike by [Saidou] Khan to make it 3-0 and at that stage you think it is game over.

“We get a penalty and I honestly believe that if we scored that then we would possibly have gone on and won the game.

“Charlie Austin scores, 4-0. Then after that what we should be talking about is an unbelievable comeback, one that I have only seen once in my lifetime and that was Liverpool against Barcelona.”
