Lewis Ward is not looking any further ahead than Forest Green Rovers after he got the opportunity to be Swindon Town's number one.

Swindon lost their fourth game in a row at home to Wrexham as James McClean capitalised on slack defending on the edge of the box to score the only goal of the game after 13 minutes.

Michael Flynn confirmed after the game that Murphy Mahoney, who had played every minute of the league season before suffering a hamstring injury, was out for the season, giving Ward the opportunity to demonstrate his suitability to become Town’s number one in the three games prior to the transfer window opening.

Ward said that he is not thinking about his long-term future right now and is making sure to focus on preparing for the next game.

He said: “I am just looking at the next game, I am not thinking about anything beyond Forest Green at the moment, that is the next game.

“I have to take each game as it comes and then from there think about the next game.

“As I said just take each game as it comes, don’t worry about that and don’t think too far into the future.

“I am ready for whatever the gaffer needs me to do, so I will just play all the games they ask me to.

“Nothing has really changed for us, he [Flynn] didn’t tell me anything different, he just said to go out there and play, go and enjoy it.”

Ward was forced into action at short notice against Tranmere Rovers after Mahoney went down with a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old said that it was not the first time he has had to replace an injured goalkeeper and you always need to be ready.

He said: “Unfortunately it was my second time doing it and it is never nice because you feel for the goalie going off.

“Everyone has been in that position, so it is not nice to put another goalie in that position.

“So, Murph [Mahoney] being the character he is, he said sorry to me straight after the game and I said, ‘You don’t have to worry about that. Don’t worry at all.’

“It is one of those when you are ready, you are alert, you get a quick warm-up in and it was just a shame that the first thing I had to do was pick the ball out of the net.”
