Michael Flynn said that he has already begun work to find a replacement for Murphy Mahoney after his season-ending injury against Tranmere Rovers.

“I think it is quite a serious hamstring strain," said Michael Flynn ahead of Swindon hosting Wrexham AFC on Boxing Day, "And I have been around it enough to know that when they are still extremely sore on the way home that doesn’t bode well.

“I would say we are probably looking at a high grade two to a grade three strain, which is not good news at all.”

Mahoney had played every minute of Swindon’s season prior to sustaining the injury and leads League Two in shots saved from inside the box, but Flynn revealed after the defeat against Wrexham that the injury was severe to the point that his season was over.

The 22-year-old went off injured against Tranmere with a hamstring injury that has proved to be serious enough to end his season.

Flynn revealed that he has wasted no time in looking for a replacement for his goalkeeper to be ready for the opening of the transfer window.

He said: “I have already started [trying to find a replacement goalkeeper] and Steve [Mildenhall] has started and so has Jamie [Russell], so we are already on that.

“I think that Lewis Ward has done really well today, he is a slightly different goalkeeper to Murph.

“I want someone to come in who is going to make us better, it is as simple as that.”

Ward has stepped in to deputise for Mahoney in the last two games and will continue to be Swindon’s goalkeeper at least until the opening of the transfer window.

The former Reading goalkeeper played the final five games of Swindon's League Two season in 2021/22 and both legs of the play-offs before leaving for Sutton United that summer.

Whilst Flynn said that he has been pleased with the 26-year-old’s performances so far, he will persist with the hunt for a new number one in January.

He said: “I thought he [Ward] was very good today, I thought he spoke well, he made saves at the right time, and his kicking was quite decent. So, it was a pleasing performance from Lewis.

“Possibly [he could be the solution], we will have to see if we can’t get the right one in then what we do then.

“I am not closing the door on that idea either.”
