Tom Brewitt said that Swindon Town shot themselves in the foot as they let their lead slip to draw 2-2 at home against Colchester United.

The defender scored his first goal for Swindon late in the first half to give his side a two-goal lead after Charlie Austin had scored an early penalty, but Matt Jay and then Conor Wilkinson scored in both periods of extra time to consign Town to a draw.

Brewitt said that Swindon were not concentrated enough in the big moments of their game against Colchester and that is what cost them.

He said: "That was massively frustrating because it is two points thrown away.

"It was an ugly game and they came here to make it ugly and we battled and we fought and we stuck together for 45 minutes of each half.

"But we have let ourselves down massively and we have shot ourselves in the foot on individual responsibility on set plays and that was it.

"I can't really remember a save that [Lewis] Ward made that was superb, they had moments in the first half but other than that they have not created much at all and this was a real kick in the teeth, to be honest.

"I think that people have got to look at themselves in the mirror, me included, I am not perfect.

"In those moments you have got to step up to the plate and say 'my man is not scoring', it really is as simple as that.

"It is difficult but that is the reality of League Two football, we can keep them at bay for 45 minutes in both halves, but if you switch off for 30 seconds then you are going to be punished and that is what happens."

Despite Town squandering a halftime lead for the seventh time this season, Brewitt said that this side still has the right mixture of mentality and quality to turn the season around.

He said: "Absolutely we have got the mentality, we have got the quality, everyone can see the quality we have got.

"But when it is January, it is dark, the pitch is playing up a little bit, and we have got to fight and stand up to be counted, it is not always easy.

"As a group, I think we did that for a large part of today and we have let ourselves down at the end of each half."
