Swindon Town have announced that they have parted ways with manager Michael Flynn after eight months in the job.

A statement from the club read that the decision for Flynn and Wayne Hatswell had left following "amicable discussions".

Flynn was appointed after the final day of the 2022/23 season to replace Jody Morris and went unbeaten through his first nine games before the form took a prolonged dip.

Since defeating Grimsby Town 2-1 at the County Ground at the end of September, Town have won just four times in the 22 subsequent matches across all competitions.

Defeat against Crewe Alexandra proved to be the final straw for Flynn, having won just once in his last eight games in charge of the club.

Flynn and Hatswell penned new contracts that lasted until the summer of 2026 in November, but they have now been dismissed just 74 days since signing those contracts.

The 43-year-old departs with a 27.3%-win ratio and with Town sat 15th in League Two, which if they ended the season in that position would constitute the club’s second lowest league position in their history.

Only Colchester United conceded more goals than Swindon during the former Newport County manager’s time in charge, as they let in 54 goals and scored 50 during his 28 League Two matches.

Swindon are now searching for their fifth permanent manager since Clem Morfuni became the club’s owner in the summer of 2021.

Flynn said in a statement on the club website: "I want to thank the owner for the opportunity to manage this great Football Club and wish everyone associated, especially the fans the very best for the future."

The club added: "Everyone here at the football club would like to express their sincere thanks to Michael and Wayne for their commitment and hard work during their time with Swindon Town and wish them all the best in the future."

Gavin Gunning will take over as interim head coach as the club begins their search for a permanent successor for Flynn with Jamie Russell helping to oversee football operations.

Morfuni said: “I have confidence that Gavin can deliver a successful campaign for the 2023/24 season and this starts with Saturday's game against Tranmere.

“We hope our supporters will continue to back the first team and the new coaching staff we have in place, as we look to build a positive, successful environment across STFC."
