Sean Wood said that Swindon Town facing Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup will be a night to make everybody at the academy proud.

Town have made their way to the fourth round without conceding a goal, breezing past Aldershot Town, Wimborne Town, and Luton Town, but will now face an altogether different proposition.

United’s under-18s have won every match in the Under-18 Premier League this season, scoring 37 goals and conceding just seven in 11 matches.

Wood said that his squad have been extremely excited for the game ever since the draw was made and are eager to show what they can do.

He said: “I would say they [Manchester United] are probably the best youth side in the country looking at their record this year and the players they have in their team which is full of internationals.

“The boys are excited about it and have been thinking about it since before Luton and then more since and over Christmas.

“Their minds have been fully set on the game and they left today buzzing.

“It will be a great experience, a great challenge, and another opportunity to play in front of our supporters.

“We will need seven, eight, nine players to be performing at the levels I know they can and if they do that then we will give them a game and we will make everybody proud on the night.”

Wood said that he and his staff have been doing thorough preparation for the game to give his players the best possible opportunity to pull off an upset.

He said: “We do quite a bit of work behind the scenes with myself and our other members of staff to make sure that we do our due diligence on the opposition.

“Get some games and go through everything tactically as best we can and then we will set up a team that we think can stop the opposition and also exploit some of our strengths against the team we are coming up against.

“Obviously, Man United will pose more of a challenge than we are used to weekly, there will be certain needs around the game in terms of how we defend the goal and having less possession.

“Then we will try and exploit some areas of the pitch where they are weak, and there aren’t many, but we will look to be a threat and cause them problems.”
