EFL pundit and podcaster Ali Maxwell described the Swindon Town managerial vacancy as a “terrible job” following Michael Flynn’s departure.

Following a run of one win in eight matches, Flynn’s eight-month stint at the helm of Swindon came to an end, with his last game being a 2-1 defeat against Crewe Alexandra.

Town will now be on the hunt for their fifth permanent manager since Clem Morfuni became the owner, but the presenter for The Athletic thinks that they could struggle to find someone looking to take over from Flynn.

Maxwell and George Elek of Not The Top 20 were discussing the decision to get rid of Flynn on their Monday podcast and felt that the Town job was not going to be an attractive proposition for any would-be managers.

Maxwell said: “I think that it is a terrible job to take if you are a prospective manager. I think that they have got a bad squad.

“They have conceded the second most goals in the league and I am fairly confident that Flynn is not a bad manager when it comes to setting up a defence.

“They have a really poor squad profile when it comes to digging in and doing what is necessary to keep the ball out of their goal.

“Famously they lost Dan Kemp and Jake Young. Who is playing in those two roles at the moment? Dawson Devoy is on loan from MK Dons and Paul Glatzel.

“Glatzel is one of those players who had quite an eye-catching youth career with Liverpool, he had a fairly eye-catching spell at Tranmere but has also had some horrendous times with injury. It would be asking a lot for him to provide even half of what Kemp or Young was providing.

“The same can be said for Devoy, he just never quite clicked at MK, he was always talked of as quite a technical midfielder but playing in that ten role behind Charlie Austin, do you really think he is going to be impacting games like those two?

“I am highly concerned. [Remeao] Hutton has the most open-play key passes in the division, but he wasn’t in the squad either with rumours of his departure.

“They are 15 points above the relegation zone, so they probably will be alright but there is so much time between now and the end of the season, there is so much worse that it can still get.”
