Swindon Town owner Clem Morfuni said that he felt he had to part ways with Michael Flynn as things “weren’t gelling” for the former manager.

Following a 2-1 defeat against Crewe Alexandra, the decision was made for Flynn and Swindon to part ways following a run in which the Welshman only won three games after signing a contract extension in November.

Morfuni said that although it was a difficult decision to make, he felt that he had to get rid of Flynn as results had been poor after a promising opening nine games of the season.

He said: “It is a results business and if the results don’t turn then you need to do what you need to do.

“When you look at the first nine games, we were flying, and a couple of clubs were after him and we didn’t want to lose him at the time.

“Two months later everything has changed, and I wish Michael all the best, but we needed to change things up, we are in 15th, and we couldn’t afford that.

“It wasn’t gelling, and we had to change it up, it is not pleasant when these things happen, but we needed results.

“We have appointed Gavin Gunning, and he has been in the building, for us, it was the right decision, and we have full support from the players.”

Flynn has been replaced by Gunning on an interim basis until the end of the season and Morfuni says that he is not currently looking beyond the 32-year-old.

He said: “At this moment in time Gavin is going to be until the end of the season, obviously we are going to look at the results.

“If the results don’t work out then we will keep looking and see what we need to do but at the moment we are sticking with him.

“He might have a brilliant run and get us in the playoffs, but it might go the other way, we are always making sure that he is right, but he has our full support.

“We have got 54 points to play for and we need to make sure we get as many as we can, we are only eight points off the playoffs, so I just need to monitor it.

“He has come to Australia, and I have a personal relationship with him, but it is about the football club and making sure the supporters are happy.”
