Gavin Gunning said that he was still looking to add a few bodies to his squad before the end of the January transfer window next week.

Swindon Town have added five new faces to their first team so far this month with Dawson Devoy, Jack Bycroft, Paul Glatzel, Pharrell Johnson, and Conor McCarthy arriving at the County Ground.

However, they have also seen all four loan players in Murphy Mahoney, Dan Kemp, Jake Young, and Benn Ward from the first part of the season depart, as well as Remeao Hutton being sold to Gillingham and Lewis Ward leaving last week.

With all the activity having already happened at the County Ground, Gunning said that he was hoping for more to happen before the window closes on Thursday, February 1.

He said: “I think that the squad is not massive, but we do not need to make too many more additions.

“I would imagine that another one or two would be fine for me, I think, you don’t want a massive squad.

“There will be no complaints from me if we have to play the young lads, that is what will happen if players get injured.

“That is why it is key to have patterns of play and know how we play, so then kids can just slide straight in there.”

Town have made two signings since Gunning took interim charge as the defensive duo of Johnson and McCarthy have joined from Nottingham Forest and Barnsley respectively.

Gunning said that he was pleased to have more options at the back but added that Johnson was unlikely to play a huge part right away.

He said: “I think that Pharrell is more of a long-term project; he will still play games, but he is more for the long-term, as well as the short-term.

“Conor has got good experience and will do a good job for us; he is vocal, a good professional and has been good around the place.

“Pharrell is a massive presence and has a big frame to go with it, athletically he is unbelievable.

“He has a lot to learn like every young centre-half: feet patterns, movements, realising when to go tight and when to drop off, giving angles off the ball, but he has got big potential.

“Conor is more polished, he was unlucky with his injury at Barnsley, but he is going to be massive for us."
