Swindon Town owner Clem Morfuni said that there is no chance that the club receive a points deduction for their EFL charge.

Town are currently awaiting the decision of an independent Disciplinary Commission on a punishment having been charged by the EFL for not disclosing the transference of a “significant interest” in the club to Holly Kiely in September 2022.

The Australian businessman said last week that whilst he was still discussing the process with lawyers, he was not close to buying the 17.1% voting shareholding back from Kiely or the 5% owned by Bethany Parladorio as the club have “more important things to concentrate on.”

Upon this being revealed, Morfuni said in a statement on the club website that not disclosing the change in shareholding was a "mistake" and he apologised to all supporters for having not disclosed the transference, which had been done as security to help cover a £2.9m in debt he did not know the club had.

In April 2023, Peterborough United were handed a suspended three-point deduction and fined £50,000 for a similar offence in which they failed to disclose that David Paton was a relevant person after becoming chief executive in January 2022 without the written authority of the EFL. That points deduction was suspended until 31 December 2023.

This, along with Everton’s ten-point deduction earlier this season for breaching financial rules, left some fans worried that Town could also be on the end of a footballing punishment, that could endanger them to relegation this season.

However, speaking to the Adver last week, Morfuni said that he had been advised that there was no possibility of the club receiving a points deduction as a result of the charge.

He said: “It [the punishment] has gone to an independent commission and we have been advised by the lawyers on what will probably happen. So, we are just waiting for their verdict.

“As I have said before on the record, I apologize for that, I was informed incorrectly, and I should have advised the EFL and the supporters’ groups.

“I am human, and I will make mistakes, we have just got to learn from them and make sure they don’t happen again.

“It [the punishment] will be a fine, it won’t be a points deduction.

“[Is a points deduction definitely off the table?] Yes. It is going to be a fine, which we will deal with.”
