Swindon Town are not looking for an assistant manager to come in and assist interim head coach Gavin Gunning for the rest of the season.

Gunning was placed in interim charge of the team following the departure of Michael Flynn earlier this month, with the team having won just four games across all competitions since their nine-match undefeated run to start the season.

At 32 years old, Gunning will be the youngest head coach in the Football League, with Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl, 34, being the youngest permanent boss and he is 44 years younger than the oldest manager in the EFL, Crystal Palace’s Roy Hodgson, who had won seven Swedish titles before Gunning was born.

Gunning is now the only formal outfield coach with the first team, not including the two analysts, Liam McCartan and Bradley Hardy.

Despite this and with the loss of Flynn and his assistant Wayne Hatswell from the coaching staff, both Gunning and owner Clem Morfuni have said that they do not currently plan to bring in outside help to add to the current group of coaches.

When asked about whether he was interested in bringing in an assistant coach, Gunning simply replied “No.”

Before expanding: “Everyone has been fantastic, obviously we have got Liam, Mildy [Steve Mildenhall], and Jamie Russell.

“Everyone here who works at the club has been fantastic, they are all chipping in, and have been great to me. I can’t complain about how it has been so far, I have been really enjoying it.

“We will see further down the line if we need that [an assistant].”

In the club statement announcing that Flynn had left Swindon, a “new-look coaching staff” was mentioned and when the Adver spoke to Morfuni, the question was put to him about whether any changes would be made to help Gunning.

The Australian businessman said that he would provide all the support that Gunning required to be a success during his spell in interim charge but would wait for him to ask for further help on the coaching staff.

He said: “We have got Jamie Russell, Mildy, and Charlie [Austin] is helping out, so we have got them.

“If he needs any more support then we are talking to him and we are monitoring it.

“We just need to make sure that we back him and we need the supporters to back him and the team.”
