Gavin Gunning said that he is looking to get the Swindon Town fans excited by their team again during his time in interim charge.

The 33-year-old will take charge of his first game in charge this weekend as Bradford City visit the County Ground having taken over following the departure of former Bradford captain Michael Flynn two weeks ago.

The Bantams are a place above Swindon in the League Two table but have struggled since Christmas, having drawn four and lost twice in that time.

Gunning said that he was hoping to use the home atmosphere to his advantage, and it was his and his players’ responsibility to get the fans off their feet and excited watching them play.

He said: “I think that when we are at home we have to get on the front foot, if we concede then that is fine but let’s have a go.

“There is no point playing sideways and backwards when you are at home, I don’t see the point to it.

“You have got to utilise what you have got around you and that is why I would say that it is massively important, I know the fans are frustrated, but on a Saturday let’s come together and push the team forward.

“Bradford will be a very physical side, they will be looking to get the ball to Andy Cook who is one of the premier strikers in the league.”

Gunning said that the key to Swindon being able to turn their fortunes around after a prolonged run of bad results which saw Flynn lose his job will be the players believing in their own abilities and what he is trying to get them to do.

He said: “It will be a tough game but hopefully we are going to get the fans off their bums and excited to come and watch us.

“But that is all words unless the players can go out there and show it, I can say in all the interviews that we are going to do this or that. The players have to buy into it and they have to show and deliver on a Saturday.

“Whether they go 1-0 down after 20 seconds or 1-0 up after 20 seconds, whether we are 2-1 down after 89 minutes and we are trying to chase the game then they have got to believe in themselves and the process. That is just plain and simple.”
