Sean McGurk said that he is hoping that his technical skill will help him to make the step up to senior football with Swindon Town.

The 20-year-old made his first league start against Gillingham on Tuesday night and notched his first senior goal after getting away from a defender and dispatching a shot into the top corner.

McGurk said that despite coming up against some much bigger players at this level, he thinks he will be able to find ways of overcoming that.

He said: “Being small and not the most physical player I have got to find ways of beating people and adapting to men’s football.

“I think that [agility] helps massively and your ability on the ball is going to help you massively and get you out of certain situations.

“I have just got to keep doing that and see where I can go.

“I would say for the last year or so I have been wanting to get out on loan and show what I can do and my ability, but obviously it hasn’t happened.

“When Swindon came in, I just wanted to go for it, they show trust in young players, so hopefully that pays off for me personally and I am just excited to get going.”

McGurk’s first senior goal came after a fine dribble and finish into the top corner and he said that he could not have asked for much more from a first EFL start.

He said: “It was good, the ball kind of just came to me and I have tried to get the shot off quickly and it has gone in.

“I took the touch and saw the two defenders, and before the two defenders and the goalie could get set, I thought I would get the early finish.

“Any goal is good, but to get my first goal in my first start, I couldn’t ask for much more than that.

“There is not much better for a first game than getting a goal, although it was disappointing to come away with only a point when we deserved three.

“I enjoy getting a goal in any game, I know I can do that and by getting it tonight hopefully I can just carry on kicking on.

“There are still 14 or 15 games until the end of the season and I just want to see how many I can get.”
