It has been over a month since Gavin Gunning took interim charge of Swindon Town and he’s starting to feel like Swindon have a style of play alongside a good culture.

Since taking charge after Michael Flynn’s departure, the Irishman has picked up five points from a possible 12 but feels like he could have had more.

Gunning said: “Everyone’s bought into what we’re trying to do and we’re playing a really good style at the minute.

“It’s only been four games but I think we’ve had about 80 shots so it’s been really good stuff so far.

“A couple of slack goals, but that’s sometimes the level, sometimes the lack of concentration and sometimes it’s just that people make mistakes – it’s football, even at the top level it happens.”

In terms of getting his side to play his attacking and more direct style, Gunning thinks the players are starting to catch onto his ideas and his culture.

“I think we’ve floated along not having a style of play for a while now and the clear pictures there for everyone to see what we’re trying to do.

“And trying to create a culture of no-blame, don’t look to shift the blame onto somebody else.

“It’s all up front and an environment where you’re not afraid to say stuff on how you’re feeling and if you need someone to speak to, it’s just creating a good environment like that is very important.

“Having an competitive environment would be compassionate and I think too many people now worry about themselves, they don’t care about anybody else and then when someone’s struggling they don’t even realise it because it’s too fixated on themselves.”

In relation to creating a positive culture, the head coach also discussed the topic of mental health and how important it is in football and everyday life.

“I think mental health is obviously massive in life now and it’s a real struggle that people go through and a lot of people are afraid to speak about it.

“And if you don’t speak about it, you just struggle,” Gunning added.
