Gavin Gunning is optimistic that Swindon Town will begin to string positive results together based on the work he has done on the training ground.

Swindon have won just once since the 33-year-old took over on an interim basis following the departure of Michael Flynn in January, but they take on Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night with whom they are level on points.

Gunning said that it has been frustrating not to collect all the points that he believes they have been worthy of based on their performances under his charge and is confident that pattern will change.

He said: “I feel as though I have given the team a different style of play, but we haven’t got the points that we should have.

“It is not as if the results were just going to click [as soon as I came in], but you would hope from the work that we have done that it will start coming good.

“I am very optimistic that we will start winning games very soon and hopefully we will be able to put a run together.

“But I am also realistic in the fact that we have won four games in about 28, so that is the realism of where we are at.

“I think the dynamic of the group is changing for the better, but we have got to start winning games as well.”

Although Gunning said that he did not think that his performance as interim head coach should be based entirely on results as there was more strong work going on.

He said: “Possibly [playing Tranmere is a barometer for improvement], if we go and stink the place out tomorrow then that happens in football, you can’t just judge it on one game.

“Sometimes you get so fixated on something and you are thinking that this will be the game or this will be the game.

“If you are doing the right processes then the results will come, that is the thing.

“People are fickle in football all the time, whether that is the fans or people who work in football.

“It is a results business but if you can see the different dynamic of a team and how it is evolving then you can grin and bear it a little bit.

“Whereas if it is not getting any better and it is the same old c*** then it is like tumbleweed.”
