Gavin Gunning said that the focus at Swindon Town should be on the development of players rather than him after they got back to winning ways.

Swindon won their first game since Gunning’s first in interim charge against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night, ending a run of five matches without a win in League Two, as Sean McGurk and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy got the goals.

Lots of discussion has persisted around the 33-year-old since he took over from Michael Flynn in January over his performance and whether he would be taking the role on a full-time basis, which he has stated on multiple occasions is his desire.

However, with Swindon having the league’s fourth youngest squad, Gunning said that the focus at the club should not be on his tactical decisions but how he is helping to assist with the development of that young crop of players.

He said: “It is not the Gavin Gunning show, I am just here to help accommodate the players, it is up to me to help them and put them in the right positions to help them.

“If they take it on board then that is fantastic and if they improve as players under me then that is brilliant.

“But I have got to be the facilitator to these players and what they are weak at, to try and get them away from that and see if we can add stuff to their game to improve them.”

One surprise decision that Gunning did make in the game was his choice of playing Dawson Devoy and Ricky Aguiar as a double pivot in midfield, due to the absence of the suspended Saidou Khan and injured George McEachran, who are more accustomed to playing at the base of the midfield.

Gunning said that he felt the pair did well in their unfamiliar roles against the stern test of a physical Tranmere midfield.

He said: “They [Aguiar and Devoy] did well, it was a tough game in there with a lot of second balls and a lot of bouncing balls, so it wasn’t a nice one.

“They are both footballers, so it wouldn’t have been their favourite game in there I don’t think tonight, but they dug in.

“At times we probably had a couple of sloppy turnovers but that is football, you are going to make mistakes and it is about how you bounce back from that.”
