Gavin Gunning has urged Swindon Town fans to “get excited” about the club’s young talent and the prospect of the future.

Swindon fans have been enthused by the promise shown by multiple young players in recent games, particularly Sean McGurk, who got a goal and an assist against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night as he continued a strong start to life at the County Ground.

Speaking ahead of their clash with Harrogate Town this weekend, Gunning was asked about the start that McGurk had made and the interim head coach did nothing to dampen expectations surrounding the youngster.

He said: “Sean will be here next year, I have seen people getting excited thinking he is going back to Leeds, but he is our player, and he will be here.

“He hasn’t played any men’s football and he has come in and he has done really well, he didn’t have his best game against MK Dons.

“He wasn’t fantastic in that game, but he knows that, I have looked back at the clips, and explained it to him about where he could have been better with his positional play.

“That is what it is all about with Sean, he has got all of the talent, it is just about finding that positional play and what he wants to be.

“If he dedicates himself and gets in the gym to get that bit stronger then there is no way that he will be playing at League Two level for long, but that is up to Sean.”

Gunning went on to add that with multiple exciting young players tied down to permanent contracts for next season, he wanted fans to get carried away with what the team could become.

He said: “No [I don’t want to manage expectations]. Get excited, they are good players.

“That is the thing, we have got him [McGurk], the goalie [Jack Bycroft], [Paul] Glatzel, I am just going through the younger players and even Ricky [Aguiar] is one of our players, unfortunately Mino [Harrison Minturn] has been injured, Dokes [Udoka Godwin-Malife].

“If you look at Glatzel and the way he has performed since he has come in and anybody I speak to is saying ‘Glatzel this, Glatzel that’, he has been brilliant and he probably should have had five or six goals.

“These are young players who are all ours, so enjoy them, they are going to be good players.”
