Gavin Gunning said that Swindon Town’s 13 days without football will be “a blessing” to help looking to rebuild the players’ confidence.

Swindon have lost all of their last three fixtures in League Two and have won just two games this calendar year as they continue to struggle in the lower reaches of League Two.

International call-ups for Liam Gordon, Brandon Comley, and Cayden Bennett of Walsall have meant that this Saturday’s trip to the Poundland Bescott Stadium has been postponed until April 16.

Gunning will have 13 days to prepare Town for the Easter Friday visit of Notts County to the County Ground and he feels the extra time will be invaluable for working with the players and looking to rebuild their confidence.

He said: “I think it is simple [what needs to be fixed] mentality for us is key.

“I think that we have shown that we are a decent team and the stats back it up, I think every game we have the better of the stats, Mansfield was 50-50 but in most of our games we are the better side statistically.

“But still it is those little lapses in concentration when you are there and the ball is in the air and they will watch the ball in the space ready to react to it.

“I think that it is key that we keep going, it is a good group of guys, they are just obviously low on confidence, and they probably doubt themselves.

“I have got to change that around and give them the confidence, that we are working towards.

“At times I think you can see it, but I think that because it is a lot of defeats this season and when you get into that mindset of losing most games then it can be a struggle, I have been there myself as a player and it is tough.”

Gunning added that being given the time on the training ground will also be invaluable after a long period of games in quick succession.

He said: “It will be better for us [to have the time off] because we have gone Saturday-Tuesday a lot of the time and we have not had a lot of time on the grass.

“It is probably a blessing for us that that game has been called off, because it gives us more time on the grass to implement little bits and pieces.”
