Cumberwell Park Golf Club, Bradford on Avon, is celebrating a year of success.

Players from the club have represented the Wiltshire county team this year in what has been a successful season.

Ali James, Matt Swales, Andy Cooper and Charlie James were part of the Wiltshire team that won the Matchplay Shield and the Strokeplay Championship at the inter-counties south west week at Royal North Devon.

This was the first time Wiltshire has ever won both events in the same week, and only the second time they have won the Strokeplay Championship.

Matt Swales won the trophy for the most individual points scored throughout the week.

All four players have also represented the county in matches throughout the year.

Following on from this James and Swales were picked for the seven-man team who went on to represent Wiltshire in the English County Championships at Notts Golf Club against Leicestershire, Lancashire and Hampshire.

Although the Wiltshire team did not win, all three matches were very close with some excellent individual performances.

Ali and Matt were also picked for the south west men’s team for their annual match against the Midlands, played at Woodhall Spa in October.

The Cumberwell Park men’s first team won both the Wiltshire League and the Bristol and District and Wiltshire Leagues.

Cumberwell Park juniors lost only one match all season on their way to winning the Wiltshire Junior Golf League.

They also became the first Cumberwell junior squad to win the south west regional finals, beating off competition from five other teams at Farrington Golf Club, near Bristol.

Harry Bird shot the lowest round of the tournament with 71 while Danny Blewett was third-lowest on 73, both beating players from the national team in the process.

The team progressed into the national finals where they finished sixth out of 12 finalists Club member Steve Surry narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final stage of European Tour School by two shots at Sherry Golf Course, southern Spain.

Surry followed an opening round of 75 (+3) with scores of 68 (-4) and 70 (-2) to get into the top 19 on -3.

But Surry’s final round of 74 (+2) placed him 30th, and out of the qualifying spots.

Surry did take championship glory in the Jamega Tour this year, beating off 142 competitors over 21 courses in the south of England.

He came fifth at the final event at Bowood Golf and Country Club in Calne, meaning his season’s prize money totalled £13,795.
