CORSHAM Barbarians, the club's resurrected veterans team, ran out winners over their Melksham counterparts in a hard-fought match at Lacock Road on Saturday.

Despite the driving rain, the match served up a lively tussle marked by some impressive tries and, typically, a number of injuries.

Corsham lost the services of James Harris and Pete Beazer early on, but the home side always held the upper hand in the forward exchanges, most notably in the scrum.

Melksham it was who opened the scoring, however, as Paul Simmons capitalised on a kick through to score an unconverted try.

The hosts countered with a Steve Scholes-Hamilton try, converted by Phil Kernan, for a slender half-time lead, and they added to their lead early in the second period when, from a flowing passage of interplay, Rich Morea took the final pass to score under the posts.

Mark Simmons broke through for a second Melksham try, but an incisive forward surge saw Corsham have the final say as the ball was fed out to Ian McNerlin to dive over in the corner.
